No matter what the weather is doing outside, here are a couple activities that will help keep your child(ren) involved and have fun!
Easy Bird Feeder
Here is an easy and fun way for children to give back to the environment.
What you need:
- Small paper plates (cake or snack size)
- Toilet paper or paper towel rolls
- Paint
- Yarn or heavy duty string
- White glue
- Scissors
- Hole puncher
- Paint brushes
What you do:
- If using paper towel rolls, you may wish to cut them in half.
- Paint and decorate a toilet paper roll and a small paper plate.
- Allow the rolls and the paper plates to dry slightly, then using the hole puncher, place three holes at one end of the roll, forming a triangle along the edge (these will be used to hang the feeder, so place them at equal height and at points that will help distribute the weight evenly).
- On the opposite end of the roll, cut two small half circles on opposite sides at the bottom of the roll (these will allow the bird seed to fall from the roll on to the plate.
- Glue the roll to the center of the plate with the small half circle openings on the bottom.
- Loop the string through the three holes on the top of the roll, fill with bird seed and place in a tree for the birds to enjoy.
Easy Caramel Apples
This easy treat is a fun and delicious activity to do with children. Dip your apple into any kind of topping, like chocolate chips, crushed cookies, nuts, mini candies or sprinkles!
What you need:
- 3-4 refrigerated apples
- Popsicle sticks (forks work too!)
- Chewy caramels (10 to 14 oz. bag)
- 2 tablespoons milk
- Wax paper
- Cooking spray
- Toppings (sprinkles, crushed cookies, nuts, chocolate chips, candy corns, etc.)
What you do:
- Take your apples out of the fridge, take the stems off and push a popsicle stick into the top of the apple. Place in the freezer for 5 minutes while your getting your other ingredients ready.
- Put your toppings into individual paper plates, ready for rolling.
- Tear off small squares of wax paper and spray with cooking spray.
- Place your caramels and milk into a microwave safe bowl - this makes dipping so much easier! Microwave on high for two minutes, stirring half way through or until caramels are all melted.
- Let the caramel sit for one minute, and then dip each apple, letting the excess drip off and spooning off any big globs. Roll in topping, place on wax paper, and put immediately into the freezer for 10-15 minutes to set. Repeat for each apple, and chill overnight.
